Choose a stronger onion for an antioxidant boost

When you go to buy onions, sweet isn’t always the best onion in terms of antioxidant content. If you are looking for cooking onions, let your nose guide you. Bitter, strong onions have been proven to have more cancer-fighting compounds than their better smelling and tasting cousins.

The study measured total phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant and antiproliferative activities. Although all onions have great nutritional benefits, shallots ranked #1 in terms of these compounds.

  1. Shallots
  2. Western Yellow
  3. New York Bold
  4. Northern Red

These results could influence consumers to look for onion varieties exhibiting greater potential health benefits. It could significantly affect future breeding efforts to enhance onion nutritional qualities vs taste only.
